When you have decided to build a pole barn, the beginning of construction is an exciting time. If this is the first time you have had one built, you may not know what the process looks like. The first thing that will need to be done is site prep. Getting the land ready for barn construction is an important step that needs to be done right. D’Amorie Construction is here to explain what site prep looks like when you’re getting ready to construct a pole barn.
The Site Prep Process for Pole Barn Construction
There are several steps involved when it comes to getting your property ready to build a pole barn. Here are the basic steps and what they entail:
– Determine Building Site: The first thing that needs to be done is to stake out the site for the building. You’re going to want to consider the views, the sun exposure, distance from other structures and other considerations as you determine the ideal place on your property. Four markers will be used at each corner of the building to stake it out. Exact measurements are ideal, but not a deal breaker. The pad will generally be a few feet larger than the barn to help ease construction.
– Remove Undergrowth: There might be trees, bushes and shrubs found in the area that you would like to build. In this case, they will need to be removed as the second step in site prep. This can be a dangerous process and should be handled by professionals. It is especially true when removing large trees from the site. The roots need to be removed completely from the ground as they can cause problems with the concrete and cracking down the road.
– Top Soil Removal: The soil that is found on the surface of your property is usually filled with debris that you don’t want there. Roots, twigs, leaves and other debris can cause problems for construction down the road. Top soil needs to be removed so that there isn’t anything decaying under a slab if you decide to pour one. It can create air pockets under the slab which can lead to sagging and cracking later.
– Add Fill Material: Next, there will be fill material that is brought in. This is usually sand or fine gravel and this is ideal for concrete slabs. It has to be smoothed to where it is level and then compacted down. This will give your pole barn a solid base. The fill need to be built up 6-12 inches.
– Grading: There will be some grading that will be required as well to ensure that any runoff moves away from the building and not toward it. The slope needs to be at least 5%.
