Problems Caused by a Broken Catch Basin
Before anyone asks what the problem with a broken catch basin in a parking lot is, we would like to explain the issue. When you don’t have a catch basin that is working to drain off the rainwater and other runoff, it becomes nothing more than a hole. This isn’t helpful at all. If the catch basin sinks too far, it will become disconnected from the main storm sewer line. The water will just continue to fill the hole until it is overflowing into the parking lot, creating a lake effect. If this is happening, chances are, you are going to need a full catch basin replacement.
Catch Basin Replacement Process
When a catch basin needs to be completely replaced, it is quite the process. It will require heavy excavation equipment to get the job done. Here is what you can expect:
– A saw will be used to cut out the asphalt around the catch basin
– Area will be excavated
– Disconnect the catch basin from the storm sewer system
– Completely remove and demolish the old catch basin
– Install a new precast catch basin
– Install adjustment rings and concrete collars
– Connections between the sewer pipes and the catch basin will need to be regrouted
– Use equipment to put back the material excavated earlier
– Reinstall the grate
– Pour new concrete or asphalt down to the catch basin on a slope
