– Age of Water Heater: The first thing that you need to be aware of as a homeowner, is the age of your water heater. On average, a water heater will last for about 10-20 years before it needs to be replaced. If you have a water heater that is over 10 years old, you might want to start checking on it more regularly. You can look at the serial number and the date on the sticker found on your water heater to find out exactly how old it is.
– Rusty Water: You shouldn’t turn on your water in your home to see rusty water coming out of the faucet. This is a sign that there is some sort of corrosion that is happening inside the water heater. If you have galvanized pipes in your home, it could be coming from there, but many people should look at their water heater if they ever see water that looks rusty.
– Strange Water Heater Noises: Anytime a certain system in your home is making strange noises, it is cause for concern. As your water heater ages, there is a certain amount of sediment that starts to build up in the bottom from years of heating the water. This can cause your water heater to have to use extra effort to heat the water for your home and can cause rumbling noises when it’s working.
– Metallic Smell: You don’t want to taste or smell anything metallic in the water you’re using in your home either. This is another sign your water heater is struggling.
– Leaking Water Heater: Another issue that comes from an old water heater are leaks. If you notice that there is water pooling around the outside of your water heater, it is time to replace it with a new one before you experience water damage in your home.
